Considering joining a study or want to learn more about clinical research? We’re here to help you make an informed decision.
The medications we take, the treatments we trust, and the preventive care we rely on all have one thing in common: they were tested through clinical trials before becoming part of routine healthcare. These advances are made possible by the people who volunteer to participate, individuals from all walks of life, some managing health conditions, others in good health, all contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge.
When you participate in a trial at Monash House Research Centre, you’re joining a community committed to pushing the boundaries of healthcare innovation.
Clinical trials play a vital role in testing new treatments and help us learn how well new treatments work for different people before they’re used in everyday care. By participating, you have the opportunity to:

Play an essential role in advancing medical science and improving health outcomes for others.

Be part of a collaborative approach to improving your health and the health of future generations.

Gain access to innovative treatments and therapies that are not yet available to the public.

Benefit from close monitoring and care from experienced medical and research professionals.
You will be guided through each step of the study with clear, written information, with the research team on hand to support you throughout your involvement.
Your safety and wellbeing are our highest priority. Every study conducted at our site is reviewed and approved by an independent Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and is carried out in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP). All studies are closely monitored to protect your rights, safety, and privacy.
So, you’ve registered your interest in a clinical trial. Here’s a simple outline of what your participation may look like.

A member of our research team will call to explain the study and ask a few questions about your medical history and current health. If you meet the preliminary requirement, we’ll invite you to the clinic for a screening visit.

At the clinic, our team will undertake various assessments to help confirm whether the study is suitable for you. This may include blood tests, a review of your medical history, and other tests specific to the trial.

A medical professional will go through the Participant Information and Consent Form (PICF) with you. It explains the study procedures, possible side effects, and your rights as a participant. You can take your time, ask questions, and choose to take the PICF home before deciding. Signing is completely voluntary.

If you are eligible and choose to participate, you’ll attend visits in line with the study schedule. These may include health assessments, questionnaires, and check-ins with the study team. Your study coordinator will guide you through each step and remain your main point of contact.
If you are interested in participating in a study or would like to discuss whether a clinical trial may be suitable for you, please complete the enquiry form.
Our team will provide you with detailed information, explain what participation involves, and answer any questions. There is no obligation to take part.
A clinical trial follows a detailed plan called a protocol, which outlines the study’s objectives, procedures, eligibility criteria, and schedule. Depending on the study, you may receive an investigational treatment, undergo medical tests, or complete health-related questionnaires. The research team will explain every step before you begin.
Your safety is the top priority. All clinical trials conducted at our site are approved by an independent Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) and comply with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. A qualified medical team monitors participants throughout the study, and strict safety reporting processes are in place.
Some studies may involve side effects, which can range from mild to more significant depending on the treatment. All known and potential risks will be clearly outlined in the Participant Information and Consent Form (PICF) before you agree to take part. The research team will monitor you closely and you can report any concerns at any time.
Your data is collected, stored, and managed in accordance with Australian privacy legislation and the study’s approved ethics protocol. Results are used to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the treatment under investigation. Your personal information is kept strictly confidential and is de-identified in any published research.
We take data protection very seriously. All participant information is handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the Australian Privacy Principles, and the specific requirements of the approved ethics protocol. Access to your data is restricted to authorised members of the research team, the study sponsor, and regulatory authorities as required.
Some studies offer reimbursement for your time and travel expenses. This will be outlined in the Participant Information and Consent Form for each specific study. Any reimbursement is designed to compensate for inconvenience and is not intended as an inducement to participate.
A placebo is an inactive treatment — often described as a ‘sugar pill’ — that looks identical to the study treatment but contains no active ingredient. Placebos are used in some clinical trials to help researchers determine whether the study treatment is more effective than no treatment. If a placebo is used in a study, this will be fully explained to you during the consent process, and you will be told the likelihood of receiving the placebo versus the active treatment.
